Environmental Justice Network Meeting

Friday, 1 October 2021 - 2:00pm to 3:15pm
Online

In Autumn 2020, the IES conducted a survey to understand the experiences of environmental professionals who have been affected by issues relating to environmental justice or incidents where environmental science and science-based advice has been compromised or ignored in decision-making.

The purpose of the survey was to identify the ways in which we could support our members affected by these issues. 95% of respondents who are IES members and have been affected by issues related to environmental justice think that the IES should offer support in this area, and the most popular option for this was the creation of a network for environmental professionals affected by these issues.

It is with this in mind that we are launching our first environmental justice network meeting. This network is designed to provide a safe space for environmental professionals to discuss and share their experience of environmental justice and hear from invited external speakers on topical issues. All environmental professionals who have been affected by issues of environmental justice or with an interest in this topic are welcome to attend. Attendees may remain anonymous throughout the meeting and do not need to provide a Zoom name or turn their camera on if they do not wish. All discussions had at these meetings will be treated as confidential.

We will be joined at this event by expert speaker Luke Murphy, Head of the Institute for Public Policy Research’s (IPPR) Environmental Justice Commission, who will be discussing their recent publication Fairness and opportunity: A people-powered plan for the green transition.  Luke will set out the conclusions of final report of the Environmental Justice Commission. The commission was set up to develop a positive vision and a plan to tackle the climate crises by bringing about a fair and just economic transition - with the starting point that people must be at the heart.

Register your place now for the chance to connect with fellow environmental professionals and discuss environmental justice issues.
