Stephen has worked for over 14 years in industry and academia delivering sustainable design, insight, strategy, guidance and delivery to a wide range of organisations seeking to improve their performance, reduce costs and gain competitive advantage. With a vast amount of experience of design, strategy and implementation, Stephen has worked with clients in as Volkswagen AG, European Commission, US Department of Energy, Department for Transport, Welsh Assembly Government, Royal Mail Group, the Olympic Delivery Authority and Typhoo. Stephen has been a member of the IES since 2006.
Stephen’s guiding principle is that low carbon design and energy/cost reduction go hand in hand. With new regulation and legislation pending e.g. the Energy Savings Opportunities Scheme (ESOS), every business will need to address sustainability to survive. He has worked in the sustainability and low carbon design sectors for some of the world’s leading consultancies (KPMG LLP, AEA Technology and Arup) for clients in the UK, US, Europe and China.
He is currently the Low Carbon Design Specialist and Senior Lecturer in the School of the Built Environment at Liverpool John Moores University; which involves research, enterprise and teaching across the school and further afield. Stephen currently has a dual function at the university, acting as a Senior Lecturer in the School of the Built Environment and working with industry as a Low Carbon Design Specialist.
During 2014, he jointly assisted in securing a £1.3m project on low carbon innovation for SMEs. In addition he is currently assisting on the development of the university’s sustainability strategy and most recently is assisting the estates team in the £120 million redevelopment of Copperas Hill. Recently, Stephen has been asked by numerous institutions to provide expert opinion on topical energy and low carbon issues. Some examples of this include four recent live radio features for the BBC, articles for the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and publication of his work in journals and at conferences.
