Impact Assessment Land Condition

This NCLOG webinar will provide an introduction to the CIRIA 'Good practice guide for managing climate change and extreme weather in land development: effective management of geo-based risks' (C824). It will highlight the importance of integrating climate change impacts into geo-environmental assessments.

This webinar is designed for NCLOG members, including Contaminated Land Officers, Environmental Health Officers and other local authority professionals working in contaminated land. It will provide a briefing on the framework developed in the CIRIA C824 guidance. The speakers will focus on the integration of climate change impacts into the LCRM process and the use of the related environmental watchpoints, illustrated through detailed case studies.

Our speakers

Helen McMillan

Helen is a Techinal Director and Controlled Waters Risk Assessment Lead at RSK Geosciences. She is a qualified hydrogeologist, Chartered Geologist and ASoBRA controlled waters specialist with over 20 years' experience in land contamination and risk management. Helen was a lead author of the award winning SoBRA Guidance on Assessing Risks to Controlled Waters from UK Land Contamination under Conditions of Future Climate Change. She has contributed to Environment Agency workshops supporting regulatory considerations on climate change impacts and adaptation for radioactive waste disposal, landfill and land contamination. She has presented widely on incorporating climate change considerations into land contamination assessments, helping to share learning and best practice across the industry. She was a lead author of CIRIA C824 good practice on mitigating climate change impacts on geo-based risks.

Dr. Tom Henman

Tom is a Director of RSK Geosciences responsible for leading on sustainability and innovation. He is a geoenvironmental specialist with 30 years’ experience of land contamination assessment and remediation. He is a Chartered Chemist and Scientist, a SILC and SQP.  He has wide experience of advising on land contamination and waste management issues in support of brownfield development and infrastructure projects and helping clients meet regulatory requirements, e.g. Part 2A and environmental permitting (EPR/ PPC/ IED). He has experience of a wide range of remediation techniques and has successfully completed projects at options appraisal, design, implementation and verification stages. Tom is recent Past Chair of the SiLC Professional and Technical Panel and current Chair of the SiLC Board. He has co-authored technical guidance and research papers on geoenvironmental issues, including coal mine gas risk, soil reuse and achieving biodiversity net gain on brownfield sites. Tom has acted as project director for both the NHBC NF93 report and the production of CIRIA C824 good practice on mitigating climate change impacts on geo-based risks, where he was also a lead author.
