Explainer: the health impacts of noise

Noise matters for our health and wellbeing. In the video below, internationally recognised expert Professor Charlotte Clark presents the latest evidence on the impacts of noise pollution on human health. This presentation formed part of the launch event for Noise Action Week 2026.

Highlighting the fact that “you can never turn your ears off”, Charlotte demonstrates how noise is an unavoidable part of daily life and why unhealthy exposure must be taken seriously. Drawing on the latest research, she explores the wide-ranging consequences of noise pollution, from cardiovascular disease and reduced quality of life to impaired learning, concentration, and cognitive development, while also challenging common misconceptions through clear and compelling myth-busting.

The presentation makes a powerful case for urgent, evidence-based action to reduce harmful noise exposure. It advocates for innovative solutions that move beyond accepting noise as an inevitable by-product of modern life, calling instead for stronger prevention at the source and healthier sound environments in the places where we live, work, learn, and travel.
