Science Council appoints new CEO

Stephen Jacob, formerly CEO at The Institute for Agriculture and Horticulture (TIAH), has started as the Science Council’s new CEO on 1st September.

Stephen has an established track record in executive leadership, having previously led the awarding body and professional membership organisation, BASIS Registration Ltd., where he advanced professional standards, qualifications and continuing professional development for the agronomy profession.

At TIAH, Stephen has overseen the organisation’s work to promote professionalism, lifelong learning and workforce development across the agriculture and horticulture sectors, enhancing professional recognition and supporting the development of skills and careers.

Stephen’s appointment to the Science Council represents a natural progression in a career dedicated to strengthening professional practice, supporting people to develop throughout their careers, and championing high standards across science-based professions.

David Wells, Chair of the Science Council, said, “The Trustees and I are very pleased to have Stephen join the Science Council. He brings a wealth of experience as we continue to progress our current strategy. He will be building on the great work of Della Freeth to increase the Science Council’s advocacy and impact for our member organisations. We are looking forward to this exciting time for the Science Council and working with Stephen.”

Accepting the position, Stephen said, “I was attracted to the Science Council because of its unique role in championing professional recognition and bringing together the science professions to deliver public benefit. I look forward to working with the Board, member bodies, and staff to build on the organisation’s strong foundations, strengthening its influence and ensuring it continues to support a trusted, skilled and diverse science workforce.”

The IES is a member of the Science Council, and the organisation provides the Registration Authority for Chartered Scientists.
