Land Use Framework (IES Member briefing)
This briefing is now out-of-date. For all the latest information, see our IES Member Briefing on the Land Use Framework for England.
Since the start of the 2020s, the UK Government has been working to produce a Land Use Framework for England, with the goal of setting out a multifunctional approach to land use across the country.
The briefing was due to be published in 2023, but was delayed. In 2024, the IES consolidated the existing commentary from across the sector, government, and other sources, creating this briefing as a source of information for professionals on the Land Use Framework, what was being proposed, and the implications for environmental scientists.
Our briefing had a large impact. It was read thousands of times, drawing a wide readership from across the IES membership, NGOs, and government. Analytics suggest that it is a trusted source of information about the Land Use Framework and its implications. The briefing also served as a starting point for ongoing engagement by the IES with policy makers and stakeholders.
At the start of 2025, the Government held a Land Use Consultation, offering the first insights into proposals for the Framework. Following that consultation, the IES updated its briefing with fresh insights on the Government's approach. Read the updated briefing here.
