Innovative Geosynthetic Solutions for Brownfield Remediation

This presentation explored how modern geosynthetics can revolutionise brownfield remediation by replacing cumbersome, traditional earth-moving methods with high-performance engineered solutions. Our speaker, Nick Edwards, explained how Permeable Reactive Barriers and Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCLs) offer superior containment and treatment of contaminants within a significantly smaller physical Geosynthetic footprint. By moving away from massive clay caps and slurry walls, developers can reduce both the carbon footprint, logistical complexity and cost of remediation.

Beyond containment, Nick also explored how smarter water management using drainage composites and dewatering tubes. These technologies streamline the handling of contaminated sludge and groundwater, facilitating rapid on-site volume reduction without the need for energy-intensive mechanical drying. By integrating these advanced materials, project managers can accelerate timelines and save costs, proving that sophisticated geosynthetic design is the key to turning derelict land into viable, sustainable assets.
