The urban environment: 1

Publication date:
January 2008

With more than half the world's population living in urban areas for the first time in human history, the first of two issues on the urban environment investigates the challenges encountered in the urban environment. The problems can be numerous, including air quality, contaminated land, management of watercourses and the protection of the natural environment in urban areas. This issue presents a snapshot of the environmental expertise required to create truly sustainable cities.
