Ecology & Conservation Land Condition Waste Management

How can we maximise the reuse of soils when redeveloping brownfield and potentially contaminated land, while also meeting biodiversity and waste requirements?

This webinar will explore the opportunities and challenges of soil reuse in the redevelopment of a former military site for housing, including how soil management interacts with Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and waste legislation. Drawing on practical experience from the project, Marc Perry will consider how soil quality, beneficial reuse, biodiversity and waste reduction can be brought together to support more sustainable approaches to land development.

This EPIC webinar is free and open to all.

Our speaker

Marc Perry is an Associate Director and Sustainable Soils Lead at RSK Geosciences, with extensive experience in contaminated land assessment and sustainable land development. He has a particular interest in what happens when contaminated land, soils and biodiversity objectives meet. A Chartered Geologist and Registered Specialist in Land Condition (SiLC), Marc is also a Suitably Qualified Person (SQP) under the National Quality Mark Scheme (NQMS). Through his work as a Qualified Person, Marc brings experience of the assessment and sustainable reuse of soils and excavated materials, complementing his wider contaminated land expertise. His current work focuses on bringing together soil quality, beneficial reuse, waste reduction and biodiversity considerations to support more sustainable approaches to land development. Marc is also Chair of the CIRIA Soil Community of Practice, contributing to wider industry discussion and good practice around the sustainable management and reuse of soils.

About EPIC

The Environmental Policy Implementation Community (EPIC) is a member-led, specialist interest group at the IES. The community works together to understand delivery challenges, support pracitioners and advocate for implementation-minded policy. Our members are local authority officers and others delivering action on air quality, climate change, nature recovery, contaminated land and noise pollution on the ground.

Membership of EPIC is free to all IES members, and all environmental professionals working in local authorities. You can register for membership here. EPIC members working in contaminated land in local authorities will also be able to join the National Contaminated Land Officers Group (NCLOG).
