Climate Action Community grows
We are delighted to welcome four new members to our Climate Action Community Steering Group! This follows submissions of expressions of interest from the wider Community along with developments to support the Institute of Air Quality Management (IAQM) and IES to work more closely on climate-related issues. The IAQM previously had it's own Climate Change Subcommittee, but in recognition of the need for more interidisciplinary collaboration to support climate action and to make better use of resources, the IAQM's Subcommittee has joined the IES Climate Action Community with two new IAQM members joining the Steering Group. They will champion integrated approaches to both climate change and air quality.
They join existing steering group members Xiangyu Sheng (Chair), Alice Doyle, Kripa Dwarakanath, Sarah Hodson, Akshatha Veerendra, and Uchenna Onyeizu. We look forward to working together and supporting interdiscplinary climate action.
Meet the new steering group members
Laurence Caird, MIEnvSc, MIAQM, CSci
I am a Technical Director at Logika Group and have been working in the field of environmental consultancy for over 20 years. I obtained a Masters degree in Environmental Earth Sciences from the University of Manchester, before building a career in consultancy. I have expertise in air quality, greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, and specialise in providing design and planning stage advice for infrastructure projects including transport, energy, industry, and waste. I have a particular specialism and interest in the aviation sector and work with a number of UK and international airports on carbon assessment and management. I have held IES and IAQM membership for most of my professional career and have spent time as an IAQM committee member. I am also a Chartered Scientist and a registered mentor on the IES Mentoring Scheme.
Hilary Hao, AMIEnvSc
I am a sustainability professional with over 5 years of experience leading projects in developing sustainable urban green spaces, educating about climate change, and mentoring young leaders in finding their climate journey. I currently work as a decarbonisation specialist at Network Rail and am a member of the Global Shapers Community in Edinburgh. In addition to my sustainability experience, I have extensive experience in community building, brand strategy, and data analytics.
Frazer Kennedy, MIEnvSc
From a background in chemistry, my career has centred on environmental responsibility - using science and technology, innovation, and effective management to develop and support sustainability solutions. My current role with Tetra Tech facilitates modelling of wastewater infrastructure to enable reductions in combined sewer overflows. Previous roles include: managing fuel decarbonisation trials for the glass sector, developing and deploying water- and energy-saving industrial laundry technologies, scaling up of green hydrogen production for energy storage, and laboratory analysis of environmental contamination. It will be my privilege to join the steering group of the IES Climate Action Community.
Vicki Sykes, MIEnvSc, MIAQM, CSci
I am an Associate Director at AtkinsRéalis with over 25 years’ experience in air quality consultancy. I have led air quality and carbon assessments for hundreds of transport and infrastructure projects, working across all stages of project development, from early option appraisal through to post-implementation monitoring, both in the UK and internationally. I have also supported local authorities in developing air quality strategies and action plans. I have a broad understanding of environmental sustainability issues, and regularly collaborate with colleagues across the wider practice, to develop and share best practice, particularly across air quality, carbon, and climate issues. I am a member of the Institute of Air Quality Management and have been assisting with the revision of the IAQM planning guidance. In addition, I am Vice Chair of the Environmental Industries Commission (EIC) Air Quality Group, and have a keen interest in environmental policy and its application in practice.
