What is Dialogue Between Disciplines?
The Institution of Environmental Sciences (the IES) is at the forefront of uniting the interdisciplinary field of environmental science around a shared goal: to work with speed, vision, and expertise to solve the world’s most pressing environmental challenges, together.
IES members have expertise in areas such as air quality, land condition, and water. These operate as distinct areas within the IES through our communities and partner organisations. However, environmental issues do not sit in neat boxes. Each specialism interacts with others, and often they use different terminology, assessment methodologies, and approaches. This can lead to siloed thinking and difficulties when assessments are brought together through processes such as a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), and can lead to sub-optimal environmental outcomes.
Unlocking multi-functional solutions to the interlinked crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution are dependent on effective interdisciplinary working, knowledge sharing, and application of systems-thinking approaches.
To bridge some of these gaps we are proud to present the second Dialogue Between Disciplines conference, which will work to actively build upon the conversations and outcomes of the inaugural event last year. The conference is dedicated to fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing between environmental professionals from across specialisms and sectors. We invite environmental scientists, practitioners, policy makers, engineers, and social scientists from across specialisms to come together in a shared mission to find sustainable solutions to the triple crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, with the aim of championing solutions and practical action.
In recent years we have welcomed new communities to the IES and this is an opportunity to bring them together. We welcome leading members from Air Quality, CEDHE, Climate Action, EIA, EPIC, FWR, Land Condition, and Marine & Coastal.
