IES signs PBCAC letter calling for the new Prime Minister to deliver on net zero targets

Houses of Parliament

The IES, along with 13 other signatories to the Professional Bodies Climate Action Charter, have joined forces to send a letter calling for the new Prime Minister to deliver on the UK's commitment to reach net zero by 2050.

The Professional Bodies Climate Action Charter, of which the IES was a drafting member, represents 13 million professional members globally across a range of sectors, from science and engineering to law, health, construction, and finance. The Charter aims to leverage greater collective ambition through interdisciplinary coordination, including speaking with a unified voice.

The cost of living and energy crisis highlight the importance of delivering on net zero targets; a managed transition to net zero by 2050 is the best way to shield UK citizens from future price shocks, create homes that are warm and cheap to heat, and unlock private investment at scale for the sustainable markets of tomorrow. Continued government commitment is essential for achieving these ambitions.

The letter urges the next Prime Minister to seize this opportunity to champion net zero, deliver energy security and maintain the UK’s international status as a green leader.
