The First Manchester Symposium 2017

Bringing together for the first time a diverse array of expert speakers, the symposium provides a platform for exchanging and debating contemporary responses to the global responsible and sustainable tourism agenda from England’s north-west and internationally.  

This one-day symposium is mounted by Manchester Metropolitan University to celebrate the United Nations’ declaration of 2017 as the ‘International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development’.  It also marks twenty-five years’ provision of Tourism Management higher education at MMU, accredited as a Centre of Excellence by the Institute of Travel and Tourism and an ABTA Partner Institution.  
Blending industry, academic and nonprofit sector speakers, this first edition of the ‘Progress’ symposium critically examines new ideas, experiences, successes and continuing challenges associated with the goal of coupling tourism activity more closely to serve twenty-first century global sustainable development goals.  

Confirmed Speakers

Confirmed speakers include Max A. E. Rossberg, Chairman of the European Wilderness Society; Sam Hagon of the Lake District National Park discussing an ambitious project aimed at managing emissions at the destination level; and Mark Watson presenting Tourism Concern’s innovative online ethical travel guide.

Event Details

The symposium will be held at Manchester Metropolitan University Business School, All Saints, Manchester, M15 6BH at the University’s main campus, from 0900-1700 on Thursday 2 November 2017.  Registration for 2017 is free - though places are limited – via the symposium website

Symposium Chair is Dr Chris Stone FTS, Senior Lecturer in Tourism Management in the Department of Marketing, Retail and Tourism of the Faculty of Business and Law at Manchester Metropolitan University.
