Burntwood 2012 Announcement

The IES is pleased to announce that this year's Burntwood Lecture will feature two exciting keynote speakers, environmental economist Paul Ekins and marine scientist Michael Depledge.

Paul Ekins is a prominent economist and specialist in the field of sustainable development. Since the 1990’s he has been a consultant and key adviser to Government, Business and International Organisations including special adviser to the Environmental Audit Committee of the House of Commons (1997-2005) and adviser to the UK Government’s Advisory Committee on Business and the Environment. The title of Paul's talk will be: ‘Economic Growth and the Environment: the Continuing Conundrum’.

Michael Depledge scientific contributions to the field of comparative toxicology have seen him awarded with a Doctor of Science (DSc) and the Poulsson Medal of Honour by the Norwegian Society of Pharmacology and Toxicology (2009). Since 1990 he has been an expert advisor on marine pollution to the United Nations, to develop the RAMP (Rapid Assessment of Marine Pollution) programme. He currently serves as an expert advisor to the World Health Organisation and leads the European Centre for Environment and Human Health’s investigations into health and wellbeing from the natural environment. Mike's talk will be entitled: ‘The Sea Around us’.

The event will be held in the stunning Crystal Ballroom at St Ermin's Hotel. As usual there will be food and refreshments and plenty of opportunity to network.
