An Inconvenient Sequel: Screening and debate

Wednesday, 7 August 2019 - 6:30pm to 9:00pm
Peckhamplex, London

On 7th August, in partnership with Octopus Energy, we will be bringing our screening series to the Peckhamplex in London to show the documentary, An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power. This will be followed by a panel debate where professionals will discuss the science behind the headlines, explore solutions and engage people in a conversation on how we can effectively fight climate change.

Climate change is fast becoming the definitive topic of the 21st century. More than ever, we are seeing a rise in climate activism and discourse, with growing support for global initiatives such as the School Strike for Climate youth movement and Extinction Rebellion.

Since 2015, the UK government have committed to cutting greenhouse gas emissions to ‘net zero’ by 2050, ending the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2040, and joining the international effort to keep global temperature rise below 2°C - or better yet 1.5°C - as stipulated by the Paris Agreement. Despite ratification from 185 nations, world leaders from high emitting countries have expressed diminished political support to the agreement. With an increasing global concern evident, are national governments’ actions for adaptation and mitigation reflecting the severity of the climate crisis? Will this be enough to halt the planets dramatic changes that are already evident?

We must recognise the planet is changing, and at an unprecedented rate. The innovation and technological expertise present within the UK, and internationally, demonstrates the exceptional ability we have to provide solutions to key, multifaceted challenges: transport, power, building, agriculture and infrastructure. We must act now with the vision science demands and implement transformational decisions to ensure the cost of our actions does not permanently alter the future of our planet.
