Background Information
The Society for the Environment (SocEnv) is the UK body incorporated by Royal Charter (2004) which accredits professionals in the environment with the qualification "Chartered Environmentalist" (CEnv). It currently has over 7,000 environmental professionals on the register (from the UK and another 20+ countries around the world), and 23 UK professional bodies which are licensed by SocEnv to award the Society's designations. SocEnv audits processes and standards in the award of the designations.

The 23 Licensed Bodies have about 500,000 individual members from whom they may draw future potential Chartered Environmentalists to enter into the register, and there are around another 20-30 professional bodies with UK and international memberships who may in due course seek to be gain a licence from the Society.  The market for the Society's qualification could draw from a potential international population of around 1 million individuals and there are ambitious growth plans to deliver “target 10k" – our aim to get 10,000 individuals on the register. There is plenty of scope for long-term growth for this young organisation.

SocEnv has recently extended its licence opportunities with the introduction of a new qualification and designation, "Registered Environmental Technician" (REnvTech), which supports the strategy to recognise people working in different roles in science and engineering.

SocEnv makes a selective award of "Honorary Fellow" to certain individuals.  HRH Prince Charles recently accepted the award and became a Fellow of the Society.

SocEnv works with its licensed bodies to deliver events and publications that showcase the work of its member bodies.

Finally SocEnv acts as a "single voice" - especially to government - for the various specialised environmental professions. This is achieved by facilitating policy collaboration between its licensed bodies.
