Kathryn Woolley

Kathryn is a Senior Air Quality Consultant with Hilson Moran. Here she is responsible for projects including Local Authority consultation, modelling the dispersion of specified pollutants and establishing baseline conditions. As well as this, in her role Kathryn also oversees junior colleagues and provides training through CPD.

Kathryn has always had an interest in air quality, as growing up with severely asthmatic siblings gave her an early understanding of the its potential impacts. She studied at the University of Plymouth, completing a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science. During her degree she focused all her optional research projects on air quality, which included a trip to China as a collaboration with Sun Yat-Sen University and City U. This project looked at the issue of trans-boundary particulate matter in Hong Kong and Guangzhou.

"I’m passionate about air quality and although the health impacts have been known for decades, air quality has never had such a prevalent media presence."

After completing her degree, Kathryn joined Ramboll as a graduate air quality consultant, where she learnt to apply her university understanding to a commercial product. Joining Hilson Moran in September 2015, she soon progressed to a senior air quality consultant in July 2016. Here, she is particularly interested in site suitability, ensuring new developments avoid introducing new residents into locations with poor air quality. One project Kathryn is working on is the proposed St John's Masterplan in central Manchester, which is a mixed-use development that will provide over 2,400 homes, retail space, office space, green space, and a new concert hall.

Kathryn joined the IES and the IAQM to become part of the recognised collective voice on air quality. In the future, she hopes to further develop her experiences to become a full member of the IES and IAQM, and, in time, become recognised through Chartership.

"This will help me to achieve my ultimate goal - to become a recognised innovative expert in Air Quality."
