The Environmental Research Group (ERG), part of the School of Public Health at Imperial College London, is a leading provider of air quality information and research in the UK. This is an exciting opportunity to join the ERG in a high-profile role as the Head of the Air Quality Measurement team at a pivotal stage in its expansion. The purpose of this role is to lead in the development and delivery of ERG’s air quality monitoring services, including management of the world-leading London Air Quality Network and its new sister community sensor network Breathe London.
As Head of Air Quality Measurement you will lead a team of highly experienced air quality analysts, with support from a Deputy Manager and Special Projects Manager. You will oversee the delivery of multiple large public sector contracts relating to air quality monitoring, including quality control, site operation, reporting and interpretation. You will collaborate with ERG’s eight research teams to deliver high impact public information services, contribute to leading academic research and provide evidence for policy makers. You must have extensive knowledge in environmental monitoring, experience of large project management and a strong desire to contribute to delivering a healthier environment in the UK and beyond. You will also be required to sit on the ERG team leads management board.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage large projects within the air quality measurement team, with oversight of relationships with external contractors and partners, contract negotiations, contract renewal and project costing.
- Develop and deliver the team business plan.
- Line manage staff and responsible for managing the staff personal and professional development process.
- Lead teams to bid for public sector contracts and develop new business areas and good business relationships with principal clients: civil servants, local council officers and industrial representatives.
- Drive forward the field of air quality monitoring, including new technology, data management techniques, dissemination systems and public engagement.
- Identify and develop opportunities for air quality monitoring, and associated analysis projects, in the UK and internationally.
- Maintain national/internationally recognised expertise in air quality monitoring, develop and support research in this area.
- Present work at national and international conferences and colloquia, developing a significant profile in key fora, including local and national government, funding bodies and the media.
Essential Requirements
- Postgraduate degree in Environmental Science or related subject
- Record of supervising, appraising, and mentoring of scientific staff
- Management of large technical projects with responsibility for managing budgets
- Record of contract portfolio development and delivery
- A sound theoretical and practical knowledge of atmospheric science
- A sound theoretical and practical knowledge of air quality measurement methods
- High standing and national/international reputation in relevant field
