To meet the scale of the challenge posed by climate change, the focus of COPs must rapidly move from discussion to delivery. We know what we need to do, and a strong public mandate for ambitious solutions has continued to grow.
Ahead of the COP30 climate summit taking place in Brazil in November, the IES is focused on the issues that will shape the agenda. That summit cannot just repeat the same talking point, it must become a platform for urgent action.
This panel discussion and roundtable will reflect on how we can move from aspiration to action, using the pivotal opportunity of COP30 to achieve our climate goals in practice.
The event is free to attend and open to all.
Format and speakers
So that we have a productive discussion, we will begin with short presentations from a handful of expert speakers, before opening up the discussion into a roundtable format. The format will allow everyone to contribute their perspectives, but will also give you a chance to hear from leading professionals if you would prefer to 'take a back seat' in the discussion.
- Alice C Doyle is a Chartered Environmentalist and sustainability consultant advising SMEs on the Making Business Greener campaign, funded by the Naturesave Trust. Alice will be talking about the key role that SMEs have in tackling the nature and climate crisis.
- Dan Lee is a Chartered Environmentalist and Energy & Climate Consultant for SLR. His role and interests focus on renewable energy, climate change mitigation, EIA and nature-based solutions. Dan’s presentation will discuss how stakeholder collaboration can drive the renewable energy transition.
- Joseph Lewis is Head of Policy at the Institution of Environmental Sciences, working to promote the use of the environmental sciences in decision making. Joseph leads the delivery of the IES Policy Programme, standing up for the voice of science, scientists, and the natural world in policy. Joseph has ten years of experience in public policy, including in Parliament and the charity sector. He has an MSc in Public Policy from the University in Bristol, where he specialised in environmental policy, as well as a Law Degree from Durham University. He is particularly passionate about science communication and the role it can play in shaping environmental decisions.
About ROAD to COP30
Between now and COP30, the IES will be holding four online discussion events. The four discussion events will each tackle a different theme, covering some of the most urgent priorities for COP30:
- Reimagining systems
- Operationalising finance
- Adapting to 1.5+ degrees
- Delivering solutions
These events will be free to attend and open to everyone, starting with a short panel discussion followed by an open 'roundtable' format.
Before COP30, the outcomes of these discussions will be brought together in a position piece, which will be used to brief the IES delegates attending COP30.
