Declan Alder

Declan is an Air Quality Consultant for an international infrastructure and business services group Mouchel, based in Manchester. His role incorporates air quality and noise monitoring, modelling for air quality assessments, fee proposal writing, project management and liaison with local authorities.

After graduating from Queens University Belfast with a Geography BSc, Declan became a Environmental Technician where he worked predominately on asbestos and energy projects. His interest in air quality and noise started after he undertook several monitoring and modelling projects. He expanded his air quality work to include local exhaust ventilation and dust/particulate monitoring studies and became an air quality consultant in July 2011. In this position he gained greater insight into the world of air quality whilst undertaking projects that included production of ES chapters for offshore wind farms, residential and mixed-use development. His role has since expanded to project management related tasks, whilst engaging on more highways and pinch point programme schemes.

Declan enjoys the varied nature of his role: "The best part of my job is the interaction with my colleagues and the challenges and focus on ensuring that what I am doing is, not only correct for the client, but also for the wider community that it may impact upon.  No day is ever the same in a consultancy as something always keeps you guessing... every time that you have a new project, whether it is for a new or existing client, there is always something new that you have to take into consideration.

Declan became a member of the IES and sister-organisation the IAQM because of their proactive provision of air quality guidance and supplementary information, along with their promotion of best practice within the field. In the future, Declan hopes to expand his knowledge base to include a more proactive approach towards towards other environmental disciplines.  He also hopes to become a Chartered Environmentalist and looks forward to using the networking opportunities offered by IES events.
