Fang Lin

Fang Lin is an Air Quality Consultant at AtkinsRealis with nine years of experience, specialising in air quality monitoring and dispersion modelling across a range of projects, including road schemes, residential and commercial developments, and local authority Air Quality Action Plans (AQAPs). Her responsibilities include conducting detailed air dispersion modelling using software such as ADMS-Roads, processing large datasets, and presenting results in clear and actionable formats for a range of audiences. Fang also provides quality assurance by reviewing the work of junior team members and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and best practices. Additionally, since 2023 Fang has been managing a combined heat and power (CHP) testing project for which AtkinsRealis is the principal contractor.

Notable projects Fang has worked on include:

  • Port of Tilbury Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) – leading modelling and impact assessments for ecological and human receptors from road and rail emission associated with a new port facility.
  • Newgale EIA – leading modelling and impact assessments for ecological and human receptors for this new road scheme.
  • Crickhowell Bridge Road Scheme for Active Travel – evaluated emissions from both pre- and post-implementation.
  • Cheshire West and Chester Local Air Quality Management (LAQM) – prepared the AQAP and conducted source apportionment studies.
  • Central Rail System Alliance rail renewals project – Fang was responsible for ensuring environmental walkouts were undertaken, regulatory documents completed, and the Work Package Plans were prepared and shared with the depot prior to rail works commencing.

The most rewarding aspect of her current role is contributing to projects that directly enhance public health and environmental sustainability. The most challenging part is ensuring accuracy and regulatory compliance in complex, data-heavy modelling tasks under tight deadlines.

Fang holds an MSc in Environmental Management and a BSc in Environmental Science, which has equipped her with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in environmental assessment and sustainability. She also holds the NEBOSH General Certificate from the British Safety Council, which has enhanced her understanding of health and safety in environmental contexts. Her career to date has been in environmental consultancy, progressively building expertise in air quality modelling and project management. Over the years, she has taken on increasingly complex projects and a technical checker responsibility, including checking modelling work of junior colleagues, mentoring junior colleagues and managing budgets for a number of small projects.

As an Air Quality Consultant, Fang’s career goals are to focus on advancing both technical expertise and strategic influence in the field. In the short term, Fang aims to deepen her skills in advanced dispersion modelling, integrating air quality assessments with climate and public health initiatives, and mentoring junior professionals. Long term, Fang aims to become a subject matter expert, and to contribute to shaping air quality policy. She is also passionate about raising public awareness about air pollution and its impacts.

Fang chose to become a member of the IES because it aligns with her professional values of scientific integrity, continuous learning, and environmental stewardship. The IES and IAQM both provide a platform for knowledge exchange, professional development, and networking with like-minded professionals. Being a member also demonstrates her commitment to maintaining high standards in environmental consultancy and staying informed about the latest research, tools, and regulatory changes in the field.
