Building a sustainable future
Constructing a more sustainable environment
Built environment professionals are involved in the planning, design, construction and surveying of human-made surroundings, such as buildings, parks and infrastructure that support human activity.
Within the IES, built environment professionals support the design and development of sustainable buildings and infrastructure, providing expertise on decarbonisation, waste reduction and the use of sustainable building materials. Our members go beyond tick-box approaches to deliver novel, science-based solutions for the benefit of people, the economy and the environment.
Environmental science in the built environment
Built environment professionals are at the forefront of reducing the environmental impacts of the built environment for the benefit of both people and nature. Being part of the IES provides an opportunity for professionals to connect with environmental professionals across disciplines, providing myriad opportunities for interdisciplinary knowledge-sharing and development of systems-led solutions. There are several relevant Communities for built environment professionals, including our Climate Action, EIA and Air Quality Communities.
