Climatology and Carbon Management
Science-driven solutions to tackle climate change
Creating the right climate for change
Climatology professionals study the earth’s climate, including the analysis of climatic changes in terms of their causes and impacts. Carbon management professionals support people and businesses to measure, understand, report on and reduce their carbon emissions.
Within the IES we see the role of climatology and carbon management professionals as supporting interdisciplinary climate action that works to address the interlinked issues of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. Climatology and carbon management professionals within the IES support and deliver transformative solutions.
Climatology in the IES
Effective climate action is dependent on action across all sectors of society to ensure a just transition. The breadth of the IES membership supports interdisciplinary knowledge exchange and collaboration, which in turn facilitates a systems approach to environmental crises. Our dedicated Climate Action Community brings together environmental professionals from across specialisms to champion a transformative approach to reshaping unsustainable systems, focused on addressing the interlinked crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution together.
The IES also engages with several initiatives related to climate action, providing opportunities for our members to take a leading role in the sector and support a unified voice for climate action. The IES is an observer to the UNFCCC, a signatory of the Professional Bodies Climate Action Network, and a Liaison Organisation for the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), helping to develop standards for net zero and carbon management.
