Marine & Coastal
Systems thinking for the marine and coastal sectors
Interdisciplinary approaches to coastal and marine systems
Marine and Coastal professionals work across the interconnected disciplines of land and sea, working to conserve, restore and better understand the complex system which forms this interface.
Transcending spatial boundaries and geopolitical borders, the work of marine and coastal scientists is necessarily interdisciplinary; from the creation of coastal and marine management strategies to renewable energy, ocean literacy and the restoration of blue carbon ecosystems.
Unpicking complexity
The IES has a dedicated Marine and Coastal Community with members from a wide range of backgrounds and sectors. Through UN Ocean Decade endorsement of its inaugural project, Turning the Tide, the Community has explored topics such as the land-sea interface, blue carbon, the blue economy, and conservation and restoration.
As a complex system, the marine and coastal environment faces challenges that can only be addressed through collaboration. Joining the Community provides opportunities to connect with other marine and coastal professionals and work together to build interdisciplinary solutions and advance the specialism.
