Environmental Management
Putting the science into environmental management systems
Promoting sustainable practices
Environmental management professionals work to protect and enhance natural resources while minimising environmental impacts. This is a broad field including assessing, planning, and implementing strategies to manage land, water, air, and ecosystems sustainably. Their work involves monitoring environmental conditions, ensuring compliance with regulations, auditing, designing and implementing environmental management systems, and promoting sustainable practices.
Within the IES, we think that environmental management should never be a tick-box exercise. Good environmental management systems rely on a strong understanding of science and evidence, and an appreciation of natural systems.
Environmental Management through a scientific lens
Being part of the IES provides an opportunity for professionals to connect with environmental professionals across disciplines, providing myriad opportunities for interdisciplinary knowledge-sharing and development of systems-led solutions. Environmental management professionals need a working knowledge of nearly all the specialisms within the IES and there are several relevant Communities for environment professionals, including our Climate Action Community and EIA Community.
