Transport
Interdisciplinary approaches to improving transport
A route to sustainable transport
Transport professionals work to bring people — or the things they value — together. Whether implementing public transport options for a local authority or transitioning international freight towards sustainability, transport professionals support an effective, just, and sustainable approach to mobility.
Within the IES, our members use insights from environmental science to maintain and enhance mobility systems in line with the transition towards a sustainable society. They may be concerned with the air quality implications of road vehicles, climate emissions associated with air travel, or the benefits of active travel for health, the economy, and the environment. Our members work in local authorities, consultancy, industry, NGOs, or government.
Transport in the IES
Transport and mobility are complex systems, so professionals working with them are enriched by the ability to connect with others, particularly those working in air quality, climate change, and sustainability. By joining the IES, transport professionals can connect with our member communities, including the Institute of Air Quality Management, our Climate Action Community, and the Environmental Policy Implementation Community (EPIC).
Members also benefit from CPD, webinars and guidance. In 2024, EPIC issued guidance for local authorities on ‘Integrating Action on Air Quality & Climate Change’, providing deep insights on the co-benefits and implications of transport interventions at a local authority scale. By being part of the IES, transport professionals can be part of the conversation, bringing their insights to the forefront of thought leadership and having the earliest opportunity for knowledge-sharing.
