Land Condition
Leaving a better legacy for land
Leaving a better legacy
Land condition professionals measure, assess, and take action to improve land condition. They work to protect human and environmental health. ‘Land condition’ is the state of a piece of land: a function of soil quality, contamination status, ground and surface water quality, and interactions between these factors. Remediation, restoration and enhancement are actions taken by land condition professionals to improve the natural capital of land.
Within the IES, land condition professionals make up the largest specialist field. They work across sectors and collaborate with other IES fields such as water and air quality.
The IES's largest specialism
Spanning consultancy, industry and regulation, the IES’s Land Condition Community is a forum for members to network, exchange knowledge and develop tailored activities and resources. It’s linked Early Careers Network provides valuable opportunities for professional development and peer-to-peer learning for those at the start of their career. We have produced a guide (pdf) that covers all the professional development opportunities for Land Condition professionals in the IES. summarised in
The Community also champions professional standards and good practice across the sector through collaboration with key organisations and external representation on bodies like the Specialist in Land Condition (SiLC), National Brownfield Forum and BSI.
The National Contaminated Land Officers Group (NCLOG) is also part of the IES family, providing a home for land contamination professionals working in local authorities across the country.
Collaboration underpins the work that the IES does on Land Condition. Through our Land Condition Community, NCLOG, and strong external representation, we bring together different expertise and perspectives to support the delivery of a unified voice on land condition challenges and shared solutions.
