We caught up with Sam, an IES Student Ambassador, to hear his story as a student and ambassador of the IES.
How did you first get interested in environmental science?
My name is Sam and I study an integrated master's degree of environmental science at the University of Southampton. I first got interested in Environmental Science, from being passionate about the environment and that all stems from just observing the environment around me. Throughout school, my favourite subjects were always geography and biology - Environmental Science felt like a nice compromise between those subjects at university.
What was it like being an IES Student Ambassador?
I found being an IES Student Ambassador a very rewarding experience. I got to meet others with a similar passion for the environment and work together for the good mission of the IES. You can watch this YouTube video to find out more about my experience as a Student Ambassador.
What did you gain from the experience?
Working as an ambassador has really allowed me to develop and hone my transferable skills in a professional context. One example is presenting at the CEDHE forum, I talked about artifical intelligence in education and this really gave me the opportunity to practice my presentation and communication skills.
What are your career aspirations?
In terms of my career aspirations, I would like to combine my passions of the environment and social impact by helping other countries reach their environmental & social goals. Environmental Social Governance (ESG) and sustainable energy is definitely where my career interests lie.
What would be your advice for someone considering becoming an IES Student Ambassador?
Go for it! I found it really worthwhile and very flexible, so I shouldn't worry about managing the role alongside your studies. Apply today.
