Wind energy: the debate

Our latest energy factsheet looks at the generation of wind energy.  It is widely accepted that to combat climate change we need to increase the proportion of renewables in our energy mix, but windfarm developments can be highly controversial, whether on- or offshore.

The UK is now the world leader in offshore wind power generation, with 3.6 GW capacity installed, which at the end of 2012 represented over 3% of total UK energy generation capacity. With a great deal more capacity currently under construction or awaiting planning permission, this form of energy generation is likely to become an increasingly important element of the UK's energy portfolio over the coming years, so the debate concerning windfarm development is not likely to disappear...
