Sustainability culture by a thousand cuts: an integrated whole institution approach to greening your academy

Wednesday, 21 May 2014 - 10:00am to 4:00pm
Keele Unvierstiy

This workshop with a difference will take a hands on approach to exploring sustainability activity at Keele University. Rather than focus on one discrete project, we will explore how to embed sustainability into many different facets of University life using multiple entry points - creating a sustainability culture ‘by a thousand cuts’.

We will spend the morning out and about exploring sustainability education in practice and student sustainability projects across the Keele campus, focusing on how the campus acts as a catalyst for the sustainability agenda. Including a look at: Keele Sustainability Hub; Keele walled garden allotments and the Student Eats project; The Sustainable Student House project; biodiversity at Keele; and the linking of curriculum projects with estates activities.

In the afternoon we will be based at Keele Sustainability Hub for sessions around: sustainability leadership, vision and resourcing; formal curriculum strategies; ESD case studies from a range of disciplines; and the role of the Students' Union and Curriculum Development Team in leading informal and co-curricular sustainability education initiatives.

By the end of the workshop delegates will have gained many new ideas for embedding sustainability into existing activities at their institution, considered the potential successes and challenges of different opportunities within their own institutional context, and developed an action plan for taking their ideas forward.
