Coastal landfill sites: risks and solutions

Deep blue seawater viewed from above, with lighter patches and white foam indicating choppy waters

In this presentation Nick Cooper provided an overview of the scale of the problem presented by historic coastal landfill sites, the threats posed from their erosion and the methods that exist to manage them.

He also covered two case studies from northeast England where contrasting methods have been used to ameliorate such risks. In the first example, a rock revetment was constructed to protect the coastal margin against erosion, whilst in the second example the wastes eroding from the site were treated, with polluting materials taken off-site and treated materials recovered for re-use on site.

The recording will be of interest to coastal managers who are facing the need to manage wastes eroding from coastal landfills, as well as landfill managers and land condition scientists who wish to know more about the risks to coastal landfill sites from erosional processes.

The live webinar was incredibly well-attended and we were unable to make it through all audience questions in the allocated time. Nick kindly provided answers to outstanding questions after the event, which can be viewed in the drop-downs below the video.
