We caught up with Vihan, an IES Student Ambassador, to hear his story as a student and ambassador of the IES.
For the past ten months, I have had the privilege of serving as a Student Ambassador for the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES). This role has given me the opportunity to contribute to the work of a professional body while developing valuable skills that will support my future career in the environmental sector.
As part of my responsibilities, I attended monthly group meetings led by IES staff, where fellow ambassadors and I reviewed agendas and agreed on actions to complete before the next session. Through these meetings, I also learned how to prepare clear and accurate meeting minutes and gained valuable insight into how professional discussions are structured and followed through. These experiences have enhanced my organisational abilities and introduced me to best practices in professional communication.
Another aspect of my role involved supporting the IES Student Member Network LinkedIn account. I identified relevant opportunities and content I came across on LinkedIn and published them on the Student Member Network page. This process helped me understand the importance of digital engagement and how professional organisations maintain an active presence online.
One of the highlights of my ambassadorship so far has been contributing to the filming of a YouTube video for the next cohort of Student Ambassadors. Collaborating with two other ambassadors on this project was both enjoyable and rewarding, and it provided an opportunity to reflect on the value of the scheme while encouraging others to take part.
Looking back on my experience so far, the ambassadorship has been enriching and rewarding. It has strengthened my communication, teamwork, and organisational skills, while also allowing me to contribute actively to the professional community I aspire to join. Most importantly, it has shown me the impact of initiatives like the Student Ambassador scheme in inspiring and supporting the next generation of environmental scientists.
I would strongly encourage other students to apply for this scheme in the future. It offers a unique opportunity to represent your peers, engage with the Institution’s work, and develop professional skills that will continue to benefit you throughout your studies and beyond. Apply today.
